Price of Blood is the second book in a trilogy & sequel to 'Shadow on the Crown' that follows the life of Emma, daughter to the Duke of Normandy, placed into an arranged marriage with King Ethelread of England in order to buy peace from the Vikings.
In the first book the reader watches Emma get accustomed to life in England and try and establish a place for herself in the hearts of the people she now rules, at the royal court and by her new husband's side as Wife, Queen and most crucially as a Mother, to produce a son & heir.
In Price of Blood we watch Emma start to grow her family in order to further secure herself to the throne and the kingdom but with a husband and King who's haunted paranoia sees everyone as a threat, even his own Queen, and the new surge of Viking attacks, Emma has to battle immense forces both internal and external to survive at court and outside of it.
It is another tremendous piece of well written gripping historical fiction, showing that there was plenty of political court intrigue & drama well before the reign of the Tudors and more.
