Following in the steps of Neil Gaiman & Joanne Harris, the author expertly weaves Norse myths and compelling characters into this fierce, magical epic fantasy.
A dead man, walking between the worlds, foresees the end of the gods.
A survivor searching for a weapon releases a demon from fiery Muspelheim.
A village is slaughtered by Christians, and revenge must be taken.
The bonds between the gods and Midgard are weakening. It is up to Hilda, Ragnar, their tribesmen Einer and Finn, the chief’s wife Siv and Tyra, her adopted daughter, to fight to save the old ways from dying out, and to save their gods in the process.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book is a deep dive to the bottom of an endless ocean of norse myth interpretation, swirling with currents of history. It as immersive as the book is long and beautifully thick with words, and characters, wonderfully rich magic.
This book rightly deserves the quote from Norse Fantasy Queen, Joanne Harris, on the front.
It is so original in the interpretation, retelling and adaption of Norse History, Norse culture, Norse Mythology and at the heart of the narrative, Runes, in their sterotypical mystical form more than being a series of letters for carving into stones.
The character cast is as wide as a Shakespearean play, and the dialogue and twists and surprises and genuine scares are equally comparable to make such an impact on the reader.
There are so many intricate and magnificently complex characters, scenes that leave an after-image and shakes emotions. Too many that it's hard to really talk about many without spoiling things.
It is perhaps a book I would recommend for those more familiar of traditional norse mythology and not the Marvel portrayal as you are not eased into the world by the hand but more pushed in and left to fate to see if you aren't enchanted or bewitched heart and soul by what you read.
Fate is at the core of this book, encircled with runic magic and secrets.
